ila – ‘from the island’
Our architecture distils the essence of place in a joyful way that enhances everyday life. Our designs emerge from the physical, historical and cultural roots of location.
architect – ‘arkhi’ meaning master ‘tekton’ meaning builder
We reclaim the tradition of the architect as ‘master builder’, celebrating craftsmanship. We understand the need for clever functionality, adaptability and simplicity in designing a project within its budget. This is an opportunity to work precisely, doing more with less and problem solving in a poetic but pragmatic and thoughtful way. This reflects our commitment to sustainability.

Alice Nickell
I am at heart a maker, interested in materiality, craft and details. I enjoy exploring the experiential qualities of texture and light, and for me the logic of construction is integral to design, not an afterthought.
Architecture exists both in manipulation of form and space, and in the refinement of its details. I relish the collaboration with craftspeople and tradespeople and find creative ideas emergence in the cross-over of craft, architecture and making.
My career to date includes working in renowned and award winning practices across Ireland, specialising in bespoke domestic projects. I was awarded the Royal Society of Ulster Architects Project Architect of the Year 2024 for work on House at Redbrae Farm completed with McGonigle McGrath Architects.
I am registered as an architect with the Architects Registration Board.
